2013 Year in Review

2013 was a big year for Couple 117.

We started the year with a blizzard.  Who doesn't love a couple of feet of snow falling within a day's time?

It was during this blizzard that we learned that Arden is not a big fan of sledding.  Exhibit A:

Arden spent a fair amount of time with this fine fellow, Jury.  She is nearing the end of her first year in Pony Club and her D1 Certification.  I have no idea what that means but apparently that's important in the world of Pony Club and horses in general.

There were many hours spent with her other main sport.  Not only did she play with her regular league in the fall and spring, she spent 8 weeks training with the Mass Premiere Soccer pro players and 4 weeks training with the Boston Breakers, something she will resume in February 2014.

After seven years of talking about it we bought a little summer place.  The decision to purchase it was inspired by the realization that life is too short.  Dora's sister was 100 feet away from the Boston Marathon bombing.  Dora's father was diagnosed with (and subsequently kicked the ass of) cancer.  We have since seen so many family friends learn how short life is, and I'm even more grateful that we were able to do this.

We hope this little purple house can be a haven for the whole family for years and years to come.

Kids can ride bikes, grown ups can drive golf carts...

It is 1950s revisited, and it is magic.

Arden turned 8.  When we blink, she will be 16.

In the midst of it all, Dora had her spine rebuilt and is now half titanium.   After years of talking about needing to get her back fixed, she took the leap.  It went a little something like this:

It was an all hands on deck experience -Dora's parents were here for the surgery and the month after and played a vital role in her recovery.

Nonno was in charge of Arden's social schedule while Grandma Mary headed up Mama's post-op needs.

Grandma Joanne came to visit a few weeks after surgery.  It takes a village.

Now we can go on family walks.  And it is awesome, in every sense of the word.

In the end, 2013 was a lot about love.

The country overturned DOMA - an enormous step in our fight for equality.

But love was center at home too.  We are lucky to have a family who will gather around us in a time of need.  Love is hard and messy and beautiful all the same.

Perfect in its imperfection.

Love.
