Growing Pains

Another glamorous Monday in our lives. I've been thinking about motherhood a lot lately, and will elaborate in a more extensive post in the coming days. Suffice it to say, it's going too fast, I feel like I blinked and the last six years disappeared, and I fear that if I blink again she will be 12. We run and run and run and miss the most important things. So today after work and school, I didn't immediately deal with the chores that needed my attention. We played a few games of Crazy 8s and then went for a 2.5 mile walk with the dog. Halfway through the walk she took my hand. Someday soon she will think she's too big for that, won't she?

Here she is this morning, the first day of her last week at Little Sprouts ... she's been at this location of LS since she was around 18 months old. Next week will bring big changes.

Girl Uninterrupted

My office had a Yankee Swap last week. Yes, two weeks after the holidays....it's just how we roll.

One of the gifts held a most magical gift....may I present....the pirate mohawk hat:

To everyone else it was a hilarious joke perched upon the yearly Swap visitor....a tin rooster. To me? A fantastic surprise for my child. So, I swapped the cookies I unwrapped for the box that held the rooster, a packet of Swiss Miss, a (fake) signed baseball and....the hat. My colleagues know my kid. The cool kid who gets them playing pirates when she comes into the office. Arden stories make them shake their heads and chuckle and warn us against what we're in for when she turns 13. Or, you know....7. She makes them pictures and sends them her last pieces of Halloween candy.

Everyone who sees the hat knows it's perfect for Arden. Well, nearly everyone. One voice piped up....criticizing my triumph, telling me that such a hat is not ladylike. (Insert jaw dropping silence) ....I'm pretty certain my face looked something like this:

She's 5. She likes transformers.

She can recreate an entire movie with markers and paper.

She likes Curious George

She likes making things....like crayons

.... and baked goods

She can rock a guitar...

She wants to be an astronaut

She likes Scooby Doo, wears boxes on her head, and insisted that Santa bring her a goat and a zebra.

She's 5. Brilliant, diverse, curious, eager, creative, stubborn, phenomenal. Ladylike? No. She's Arden.

A Day Out With The Girls

Annette captured some great photos from her day with Arden at the Highland Games.

We got some great pics from today's big birthday surprise for Sabrina, but we're borrowing Mandy's camera and don't have the cord to transfer the pictures. We had a genius idea to try to use on of our old cameras to them off ... but it was too good to be true. Soon enough, I hope :-).

They stretched a penny....

Raising Arden

It's hard to believe, but we are closing in on 5 years old. Raising Arden has been, and I'm sure will continue to be, a total trip. She is brilliant, fabulous, and perhaps more than anything, unique. When Arden was born we were *so* happy to have a girl. We stuffed her into dresses and put bows in her hair. Dora went out and the first gift she ever got her, well, the first gift where she could really understand new toys, was a set of twin dolls. Those dolls have lived with us for 4 years now, and she's left them at the bottom of the baskets. "Arden, don't you want to push the dolls in your stroller?" "No, I'm pushing Stitch."

Arden is, without a doubt, who she is.

She loves to fish...

And be a firechief (that's her brother, Curious George)

Entirely unsure of what to do with a Barbie, Mermaid Barbie or not. Looking to Hailey for guidance, perhaps? (If she never gets into Barbie I'll be happy...all I remember about my Barbies and my grandmother's Barbies are the teeny tiny shoes). At least this one doesn't have feet!

Hailey knows what to do though!

Ah, back in the comfort of her superhero gear.

Fierce.

One of the greatest picture of all times, an early celebration of two almost 5 year olds. We are so, so lucky.
